Skjold Scholarship Fund

(A scholarship offered at the Sons of Norway lodge level).
ONE SCHOLARSHIP OFFERED.
A $500 education scholarship, intended to help a deserving student pay for their books.
The lodge also funds another scholarship at the District 5 level -
read more below.
GUIDELINES:
Skjold Lodge 5-100 Sons of Norway, may award an annual scholarship for
study at a college or technical school. The scholarship will be
in the amount of $500.00 unless otherwise decided by Skjold Lodge
officers. (We have awarded larger scholarships in the past).
The recipient of a scholarship must be a member of Skjold Lodge or be
related to a member, such as a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle, who
has been a member for at least six months.
Only one scholarship will be awarded to any one applicant in the same family in a calendar year.
Applicants must have a grade point (GPA) of 2.5 or above.
The deadline for applying for the scholarship is May 1st.
If the scholarship is awarded a scholarship check will be issued to the school where the student has been accepted.

The Sons of Norway Foundation has awarded over 250 scholarships totaling over $600,000.
HOW THESE SCHOLARSHIPS WERE FUNDED
When you make a tax deductible donation to the Sons of Norway
Foundation, you can designate which fund receives your money. If
you select a fund associated with educational scholarships, that money
is used to sponsor the scholarships listed below.
King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund
HRM, King Olav V of Norway allows the Sons of Norway Foundation to use
his name in establishing a fund to promote cultural exchange between
Norway and North America. The fund welcomes applications from
Americans, 18 years or older, with a plan of studies to focus on
exploring his/her interest in Norwegian heritage or in modern Norway at
an institution of higher learning. The fund also welcomes Norwegians,
18 and older, who desire to further their studies in North American
culture at an institution of higher learning.
Astrid G. Cates/Myrtle Beinhauer Fund
Astrid G. Cates and Dr. Myrtle Beinhauer remembered Sons of Norway
Youth with special bequests through their estates to the Sons of Norway
Foundation. We invite applicants enrolling in post-secondary training
or education including trade school, vocational school or college and
must be current Sons of Norway members, children or grandchildren of
current Sons of Norway members.
Nancy Lorraine Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund
Dr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Jensen established this fund in memory of their
remarkable daughter, Nancy Lorraine Jensen, an aerospace
engineer/chemist at NASA, who died unexpectedly at age 35. The fund
encourages female American citizens between 17 and 35 to apply for
financial assistance for programs in chemistry or physics, or in
chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering. The candidate, or
parent/grandparent of the candidate, must be a current member of Sons
of Norway or employed at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, Maryland.
Scholarship to Oslo International Summer School
The Sons of Norway Foundation offers one scholarship each year for a
student to attend the Oslo International Summer School. Visit The
University of Oslo to learn more on the program.
Helen Tronvold Norwegian Folk High School Scholarship
The Sons of Norway Foundation Helen Tronvold Norwegian Folk High School
Scholarship, established in 2005, supports the Sons of Norway
Foundation’s goal of providing cross-cultural experiences for
youth.

Following is a set of guidelines from we obtained from the
Norwegian National League web site describing the highlights of their scholarships.
Their content/guidelines may have changed since this page was created.
CONTENT FROM THE NNL WEB SITE FOLLOWS:
"One objective of the Norwegian National League is to encourage
children to investigate and learn about our rich cultural heritage.
Scholarships and cash prizes are available to children of Norwegian
descent residing in the counties of Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, McHenry
and Will for award winning essays and drawings".
There are four categories for scholarships:
(1). High School senior: $1,000
Qualifications: current 12th grade student,
Norwegian ancestry, minimum 3.0 GPA
Acceptance at a college or university
Submit a completed application along with a 500 word original essay on a Norwegian topic
(2). High School freshman through junior: $100
Qualifications: Submit a completed application along with a 300 word original essay on a Norwegian topic
(3) Fifth through eighth grade: $50
Qualifications: Submit a completed application along with a 300 word original essay on a Norwegian topic
(4). First through fourth grade: $25
Qualifications: Submit a completed application along with an original, hand drawn picture of a Norwegian topic
