Kommentar fra Presidenten (cont. from page 1).

help, but it would be fun.
Some questions have come to my mind regarding leadership.  Sons of Norway International will be promoting leadership seminar programs later this year.  What came to my mind was:  "Are we now training the next generation -- our children and our grandchil

dren -- to take over?  Are we training them about our Norwegian heritage and culture?  Are they ready to take over?"  My children are asking me questions about Norway.  "How was it when I lived there?  What did we do for the 17th of May?  How did we live?  How did we celebrate our heritage and culture?"  Will the next generation be

ready to take over when we are no longer able to lead?  Will they be able to promote the Norwegian heritage and culture and also continue promoting Sons of Norway?  Maybe we need to have this type of leadership seminar.  Think about it.

Ha det,
Jostein

Adopt-A-School Comments
"This has been as exciting an adventure for me as it is for them.  The schools are in dire need of more volunteers.  Join me, won't you?  You just have no idea what you're missing!"- Harold Hagenson.

"I did my first day of volunteering at Westbrook School. It was very interesting." - Kate Bilodeau.  More on Kate's experiences later in another issue of Skjold News.

Adopt A School Update--by Harold Hagenson

"I'm pleased to report that after 3 1/2 months of volunteer work, with a 1st grade class, at Lincoln Elementary School in Palatine, I've been "promoted" to a 4th grade bi-

lingual class of 14 children.  My experience has been even more rewarding here as I coach them in reading, math, social studies and science.  All with a goal of preparing them

for a move, hopefully, into the mainstream of life here in the United States.  The youngsters are so polite, obedient and eager to learn what is necessary."

Cultural Skills--What do I actually DO (to earn a medal)?
by Carol Carlsen

This month's "Cultural Corner" has an article about stamp collecting.  Here is how you can get started working on your Norwegian Cultural Skills Program for "Unit 3:  Collecting Norwegian & North American Stamps."
There are 3 levels to achieve.  Following are the general guidelines for Level 1 (the first level):
1. Collect a minimum of 300 different stamps from the countries of Norway, Canada, and the United States.
2. Create a dictionary of terms that are unique to the hobby of stamp collecting.
3. Select a category (i.e., commemorative, airmail, postage-due stamps, etc.) and collect at least 25 such stamps from each country - Norway, Canada, and the United States.  Make Xerox copies of the album pages containing the 75 stamps and attach the copies to your Final Report.
4. Select a special topic (i.e., animals, sports, presidents/royal family, etc.) and collect at least 10 such stamps from each country - Norway, Canada, and the United States.  Make Xerox copies of the album pages containing the 30 or more stamps and attach the copies to your Final Report.
5. Complete an Optional Activity as

described in the Unit 3 documentation.
6. Complete the Final Report Form
7. Complete the Feedback Questionnaire Form.
8. Send all required documentation to Sons of Norway International Headquarters, Minneapolis.
