Har Du Hørt by Anne Shabez

Carole J. Essenpreis (nee Mathisen), 57, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., passed away Sunday, September 12, 2004, in Murrells Inlet. She was born October 5, 1946, in Oslo, Norway, and was formerly a resident of Deerfield, IL. Carole was an avid golfer, enjoyed the ocean and boating and was a retired real estate agent in Dublin and Loveland, OH.  Carol was a former member of Skjold Lodge and the daughter of Olav Mathisen, an active member of Skjold Lodge for many years before moving to Florida.
Skjold Lodge extends our deepest sympathy to Olav and his family.

David and Connie Grevstad enjoyed David's family reunion at Decorah, Iowa, the weekend of the Nordic Fest.  There were 60 family members in attendance, but easy to spot in the crowd, all wearing SKARSTEN/Leif Ericksson tee shirts designed by David.  The family came from Santa Barbara, CA; Atlanta, GA; South Carolina; Rapid City, SD; Omaha, NE; East Lansing, MI, and our other great Midwestern states.

Prior to that occasion, David and Connie vacationed in Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, where they attended a wedding on the beach.

Carolyn and Jon Satrum and Jon's brother, Craig, took a "fall colors" driving trip by following the "Lake Michigan Circle Tour".  While on their 1,350 mile journey they saw much of the beauty fall had to offer and had a chance to visit friends who live in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area.  In August, Carolyn and Jon also attended the Tronderlag "stevne" or annual meeting.  You can read more about this on page 3.

Our good friend,
Barney Jacobson, couldn't be with us for the Skjold News Benefit, but he sent his greetings and a very nice donation for the auction.  Thank you Barney!  We really appreciate it.

Allison Jeanette Bachman was born on August 31, 2004, at 11:14 a.m. She weighed 8 lbs., 13 oz. and was 20 1/2 inches long. She was born at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. Allison's mom, Krista, gave her that middle name after her Norwegian Grandmother, Jeanette Hansen who passed away 3 1/2 years ago. Allison came home to a full

house with big sisters Holly (8) and Tracy (4) and a big brother Ryan (7). The Bachmans are doing great and can't wait to show off the new addition soon!

Kari Ann Aberly and Samuel Joseph Silliti were married on August 14, 2004. Kari is the granddaughter of Jacqueline Moe and is a veterinary assistant. Samuel is a medical student at Rush University Hospital. They now make their home in Naperville. Kari is the first of Jackie's eight grandchildren to marry. Our best wishes and congratulations to the happy couple and to their families!

Last June
Karin Wulf-Jaeger visited family in Oslo. From there she flew to Kirkenes, and took the "Narvick" south along the coast to her hometown of Bergen. She visited family and had dinner with the last one left of her school friends in the city. It was a wonderful trip with perfect weather all of the eleven days.

"In August Karin and her friend Athena spent a week in Canon Beach, Oregon, on the beautiful Pacific Ocean. They visited "Nidaros-#16" Sons of Norway Lodge in Gerhart, Oregon. The lodge has a ball field and owns 26 acres of land. They have a very large lodge building with a sizable kitchen. Sadly, their membership is dwindling. Lodge members, sisters Edith Helligson and Bernice Dacy were kind enough to show Karin and Athena around, and they were lucky enough to again enjoy beautiful weather on their visit in the very pretty state of Oregon. The tall pines and hilly terrain were a reminder of Norway.

Arthur Kleven and his sister, Olga Kleven Fowler, spent June and July in Europe. They visited their 24 first cousins in London, Bergen, Sogndal, Jostedal, Luster, Over-ardal, Ardalstangen, Drammen, Westfossen, Lier, Hakklund, Mondal, Ski, Oslo, Sauda, Sola, and Stavanger. A big hit was a shopping spree to Sweden...where most things were half price of the same items in Norway.
