Some things are difficult to discuss. Many Norwegians are still unhappy that a Norwegian would end up being associated with the word "traitor". Still, difficult things are part of life and best out in the open. The Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce is hosting San Diego State University Professor of History, Oddvar Hoidal, the leading expert on Vidkun Quisling, and a presentation of the film--"A Study in Treason", on September 28, 2004 at 6:30 P.M at the Rosewood Restaurant 9421 Higgins Road, Rosemont, Illinois. Hors d'oeuvres will be served followed by an introduction, the showing of the film and a question and answer period after the film. Normally this would be open only to Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce members, but to make it available to the broader Norwegian-American audience, Sons of Norway members and members of other similar organizations will be able to attend. The cost is $35.00 per person. Contact Vivian Landon at 847-945-8200 Ext. 158 for details and reservations. Vidkun Quisling was Norwegian minister of defense from 1931 to 1933. He then left the Agrarian party to found the fascist Nasjonal Samling [national unity] party. In 1940 he helped Germany prepare the conquest of Norway. Remaining at the head of the sole party permitted by the Germans, he was made premier in 1942. Despite his unpopularity and difficulties with his German masters and within his own party, he remained in power until May, 1945, when, after the Germans in Norway surrendered, he was arrested. He was convicted of high treason and shot. From his name came the word quisling, meaning traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country, especially by serving in a puppet government.

The June 27 picnic was great. When planning a picnic, an enthusiastic committee and members bringing great food will always insure a good time. The only other factor is the weather and it was PERFECT. After enjoying all the wonderful food, the members played a riotous game of bingo. The big winners were Doris Severson (Champagne and golf putter), Carol Ann Carlsen (travel clock and Sons of Norway Shirt), Lewis Bowles (insulated wine cooler) and Don Lien (Sons of Norway shirt). Ken Johnson read about the picnic in the newsletter and brought his wife and daughter out to visit. Thank you to the committee, James Severson and Harold Hagenson for all their hard work and to all of the members who attended for the great food and enthusiasm. A special thank you to Jostein Bakken who was supportive of our efforts.

Genealogy and Family History Cultural Skills Unit No. 3
Genealogy is a word that is derived from Greek that means tracing the ancestry of a family or individual. Genealogy is simply charting the vital facts, full name, birth date, birthplace, marriage date and place, and death date and place. Charts may be obtained from the cultural committee, or may be ordered from historical societies such as the History Library of the Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City. Family history is genealogy and much more. It includes collecting information about the life, times and traditions of the people on your chart. It will help you make connections to the past that defined and shaped your life and attitudes. That connection started for me, when as a little girl, I sat with my elbows propped on my Grandma

Lund's kitchen table, watching her bake fattigman cookies , and listening to her tell about leaving her family in Norway. She arrived in New York City on August 3,1903, after a 25 day journey at the age of 19, from Christiana, Norway, encouraged by her brother Gustav Olson. They both worked as indentured servants for a farmer near Hawley, Minnesota, for one year to pay for their passage. She met and married my grandfather, Carl Thorson Lund, in 1905. He had come to America with his parents at the age of 15 in 1891. Hilda and Carl worked very hard to make their homestead a farm and home for themselves and their 9 children. They were among the thousands of immigrants from Norway who had the courage to seek a better life for themselves in America. Stories about our families and elusive ancestors can become an all consuming, but infinitely rewarding task.
