5th District Leadership Seminar
by Judy Torgersen

On April 2, 2005, several Skjold members attended the 5th District Leadership Seminar sponsored by Lincolnland Lodge in Springfield, Illinois.  These seminars allow officers to exchange ideas, learn from each other and become informed about various district and international activities.  The seminar in Springfield was very interesting, with lively, informative discussions that helped all of us learn more about our lodge duties.  Congratulations to Lincolnland Lodge for a job well done.
Lincolnland's picture displays brought back lots of memories, especially the ones of the Norwegian Drill team. Even though our faces were hidden behind an arch holding flags for the officers to march under, Gene Kaczmarek, Ted and I were surprised and delighted to see the Norwegian Drill team in action.  Those were the fun days when we caravanned or hired a bus to travel to the various lodges in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin even in the winter (Brrrr).  Those were great days and we made many friends along the way.
Fraternally Yours, Judy Torgersen

Social Committee
Needs Your Help
At Our Meetings

recent ice cream social. (Jim Oberweis, our keynote speaker at the May meeting, was gracious enough to supply the ice cream from the dairy bearing his name!)
Members unable to attend meetings, or who live out of state, are invited to participate by sending a check payable to "SkjoId Lodge", earmarked for the Social Committee, to our post office box shown on Page 1.  So the next time you are at a lodge meeting reaching for a cup of coffee and see our "nudging" sign, remember "the buck stops here".
Then drop in a dollar or two.      Thank You

We're looking for members who are willing to donate one hour, either before or after a meeting, to help set up the tables, make coffee and help with the clean up. That is only one hour from now until December!
Also, we're looking for some new Skjold members to bring a dessert to at least one meeting between now and December.
Please call me (630-279-0411) and let me know how you will help and what dessert you will bring in what month! Thank you in advance, and 1 hope the telephone line will be burning up with callers!

Marilyn Cafferata Lien, Social Chairman (seeking your help!)

A Friendly Nudge!
Little did a former president of the United States know that his famous saying. "The Buck Stops Here," would be repeated in the Skjold News!
To help defray the expenses of the Social Committee at our monthly Lodge meetings, we have a sign asking for a monetary donation of one dollar or more per person. We even put out a dish to receive the money!
The money is spent on coffee, cream, sugar, stirrers, plastic tablecloths, etc. and to help underwrite, among other things, the summer picnic permit and the toppings at our

Skjold Building Society Lodge Program
Why does Skjold Lodge have a Skjold Building Society when we don't have a building?

If this question intrigues you, be sure to attend the August 26 Lodge meeting!

Jostein Bakken, President of Skjold Building Society, will tell us, among other things, the function of the Society, its relationship to the Lodge, the reason for having the Society, who its members are, and a little bit about the history of the Society. There will be a question and answer period.
Jostein is well suited to be our speaker.  He is the immediate past President of Skjold Lodge and serves as a director on the International Board, Sons of Norway.
Join us at 7:30 p.m. for our monthly meeting and to learn about the Skjold Building Society!
