Viking Magazine can help with your genealogy searches Tracing your Ancestors How the Viking Magazine Can Help As a member of Sons of Norway, you receive many benefits. One benefit is being able to place an entry in the "Lost Branch" page of Viking magazine. Lost Branch is where members doing family research can submit a description of an ancestor on whom they cannot otherwise find information. This will then be printed in Viking to be read by some 60,000 Scandinavian-Americans. Check out the April 2005 issue of Viking for more details.
To post to Lost Branch, submit as much as possible of the following about the relative you are trying to research: Name of your relation Names of their parents, children, spouses, etc. Date of birth Date of emigration Last known address Date of death Also provide Viking with your name and return contact information. Send your submissions to: Lost Branch c/o Sons of Norway 1455 W. Lake St. Minneapolis, MN 55408-2666
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL: Carol Ann Carlsen is now our ADOPT-A-SCHOOL coordinator. All contacts regarding this important Sons of Norway program should be directed to Carol. If you are volunteering at a school or planning to do so please contact Carol.
VOLUNTEER SERVICE SHEET
Enclosed is the 2005 "volunteer service sheet" where you can record your volunteer activity. Everything you do on behalf of the lodge counts towards these hours. We are sending the form early this year so you can record what you have done as the year progresses. The hours its members donate, helps Sons of Norway support its claim that the Sons of Norway qualifies as a fraternal/benefit organization. The sheets are due to Anne Shabez by January 1, 2006.
CULTURAL CORNER
The first offical Syttende Mai Children's Parade was announced in Christiania on May 16, 1870. The man behind the idea was Bjornstjerne Bjornson, a controversial patriot, author, political agitator and inspirational speaker. He wrote a poem called "Ja, vi elsker dette landet." "Yes, we love this country." This became the national anthem of Norway. The music was written by his cousin, Richard Nordraak.
