In earlier issues of Skjold News we discussed bygdelags, (organizations of Norwegian immigrants from particular areas of Norway, now living in North America). These are organizations that can enhance your participation in your Norwegian heritage and you may wish to consider joining one. Each year the bygdelags hold annual meetings (stevener) and while each lag is unique, the stevener usually have a focus on genealogy and Norwegian culture. Most of the stevener are held in the Midwest and are as close as St. Charles, Illinois (Sognefjord). The April issue of Viking magazine lists June-September, 2005 stevener.
Several lags are also coordinating heritage trips to Norway. There are still seats available for the Trønderlag of America heritage tour to Trøndelag from September 8-20, 2005. Contact Jon Satrum at 630-969-9146, the Trønderlag of America web site http://www.tronderlag.org/ or Brekke Tours & Travel (see the back page of Viking magazine) for Brekke details.
