Carolyn and Jon Satrum joined a group from Trønderlag of America and traveled through the fylke (county) of Trøndelag. The purpose of the trip was to allow members to experience the region where their ancestors came from and visit historical sites in the county such as Stikelstad, Nidaros Cathedral, Hegra Fortress and various folk museums. The trip also allowed for a week in Trondheim where many members did research at the offices of the State Archives there. Several members also spent time with relatives and learned more about their heritage. While there, Jon was able to visit the farm sites of his 4 grandparent's families and other family farms as well while meeting distant family members for the first time. A connection to TUBFRIM: At Sons of Norway we collect stamps for TUBFRIM, an organization originally created to help those with tuberculosis. While in Trønderlag, Jon met a distant relative who told him that the island of his mother's father's family as far back as the early 1700's (Saltøy) had a connection to tuberculosis. When this disease was a major problem in Norway, a union of doctors bought Saltøy to be used as a place where poor people could recover.

Because this was the first time that I had put together a bus tour, I wasn't sure what to expect. I worried about weather, would everyone on the tour get along well and enjoy the tour, etc. It turned out that the weather was perfect and everyone on the tour was friendly, amusing and sociable.
We had two tours of Vesterheim. On the day of our arrival in Decorah we toured the outdoor museum and the following morning, the museum itself. On Sunday evening we had a Norwegian dinner at the Winesheik Hotel topped off with rømmegrut. Monday was an "Iowan Dinner" at the Oaks which also was very good.
Our Lodge members Otto Eik and Art Kleven found long lost relatives in Decorah and we discovered that one of the tour guides was a distant relative of Art's. New members of our Lodge, Mr. and Mrs. Bender, were in Decorah and joined

us for dinner at the Hotel Winnesheik. There were side trips to Spillville to see the Billy Clock Museum, the Seed Savers and at Willowglen Gardens.
On the last day we toured the Jacobsen Farm, which is owned by Vesterheim Museum. The farm was homesteaded by the Jacobsens in the 1850's and was a very successful farm. It was interesting to see the outbuildings and the home with some of its original furnishings.
The tour was so successful, that members of this tour requested another tour next fall which would include the Northeast Iowa Artists Studio Tour. If you are interested in being on the mailing list for the next tour, please contact me at 847-398-7212.
