Election Night is November 18
by Marilyn Cafferata Lien, Chairman of the Nominating Committee

At the August Lodge meeting, the following people were elected to the nominating committee: Jim Severson, Harold Hagenson, Anne Shabez and Judy Torgersen.  Each committee member was asked to call a current officer to see if they were interested in serving in the same office or in another office for 2006.

A special committee, appointed by President Carol Ann Carlsen, met on September 20.  That Committee included Les Arnack, Gene Kaczmarek, Jim Severson, Kate Bilodeau and Don Lien.  Also in attendance were President Carlsen, Jostein Bakken and myself, though we three did not have voting privileges.

This special committee voted to reduce the number of officers to ten for the year 2006. The 10 officers are: President, Vice President, Counselor, Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Social Director, Cultural Director, Skjold News Director and Foundation Director.  These officers will comprise the Board of Directors, have voting powers, and be elected by the general membership.  The remaining officers will be appointed by the President and will not have to attend Board Meetings. These positions have always been and will continue to be vital to our Lodge.

I wish to thank the members of the nominating committee who spent a great deal of time and effort putting together a slate of officers for Skjold Lodge for 2006.  Please come to the Lodge meeting on November 18 and vote for our 2006 officers!

Please call me at 630-279-0411 if you would like to serve in one of the open officers position, i.e., Counselor and Foundation Director. Thank you.

Norwegian Language Lesson
Autumn Phrases
Here are a few Norwegian phrases about the fall season for you to learn.  Just like in America where people from different parts of the country say the same words a little differently, Norwegians from different parts of Norway will say these phrases their own way.  But, if you use what is below, it is pretty close to "correct" and you should be understood.

Det blåser ute.
It's windy outside
Say it like this: "Deh blohser ooteh"

Bladene faller av trærne
The leaves are falling from the trees
Say it like this: "Bladeneh faller av trayrneh"

Jeg liker ikke å rake løv
I don't like raking leaves
Say it like this: "Yei leeker ikkeh aw rahkeh loov"

Jeg liker høsten.
I like the autumn.
Say it like this: "Yei leeker hoosten"
