2nd Annual picnic.  Expenses for the picnic grove permit and miscellaneous expenses were provided from the "Coffee Donations" at our monthly meetings.
*Lodge minutes and financial reports - In order to allow more time for programs and socializing, it was decided not to read these reports at the lodge meetings.
*Sandwich Board - After much research the Focus committee decided to purchase a "sandwich board" which would be worn by one person at cultural events to advertise our lodge.
*Golf Outing - After reviewing the financial reports for the last 3 years, the Focus committee determined that it was not cost effective nor time effective to conduct  the golf outing.  Therefore, the lodge will no longer sponsor this event.  If lodge members want to have a golf outing, the lodge can advertise it; however, monies from the lodge will not be used to pay for this event.  The lodge needs to focus on events that will give us "the biggest bang for our buck" and include as many members as we can.
*Lodge/Board Meetings at the church - In keeping with the financial stability issues of the lodge, upon further investigation with the St. Mark Church office, we were informed that we would not have to pay rent for our June meeting.  Instead, we used the saved money on the picnic permit for the lodge picnic, which was held on Father's Day.
As you can see, the Focus Committee has been very busy this year. They meet once or twice a month to discuss issues regarding membership and finances.  The Focus Committee is to be commended for all their hard work.

At our July Lodge meeting, our activity consisted of Norwegian Bingo.  Jim Van Winkle and his daughter, from Polar Star Lodge, presented this activity.  What a history lesson!  We had a great turnout for this event and so many people asked for a repeat session.  We'll place this activity on our future calendar!  Thanks go out to Jim and his daughter and to everyone who brought "gifts" to share.

One of our members, Thor Skarsgor, passed away on June 3rd.  Thor would have been 101 years old on July 21st.  He was a life member of Skjold Lodge since February, 1944.  In a note received from Thor's children, they mentioned that he enjoyed his times at the meetings and outings and enjoyed receiving our newsletter.  Thank you all for participating in the moment of silence we had at our lodge meeting in July.
We welcome two new members to our lodge.  They are
Solveig Bender and John Halversen.  We've seen John several times at the lodge.  Solveig attended the Skjold Lodge Heritage Fest back in November.  We look forward to seeing both of you at our upcoming meetings!
A reminder to all of you, if you have not turned in your Skjold Lodge member interest questionnaire, sent to you with the July/August newsletter, please do so as soon as possible.  The questionnaire helps the board in planning activities, finding out what activities you are interested in, etc.  Many hours went in to creating this questionnaire so do your part as a member of Skjold Lodge, complete the questionnaire and send it to the lodge by return mail.
We are open to all suggestions on how to improve the lodge for you, our members.  Should you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me (847-362-8030 or cacarlsen@hotmail.com).
For those of you who have not been at a meeting for a while, come and join us!  We look forward to seeing you.

Ha det!

It has been very hot this year with little rain.  I do hope you are all enjoying your summer!

This year, we created the Focus Committee.  The committee's mission is to focus on programs and plans to increase membership and review the budget and financial stability of the lodge.  Committee members are:  Marilyn and Don Lien, Rick Severson, and Kate Bilodeau.  Don Lien is committee chair.  Below is a list of items that the committee has completed to date:
*Membership Roster - Reviewed and presented a report to the lodge board regarding the ages of our members.  The majority of our members are over the age of 70.  Plans are continuing to be discussed for increasing membership in all age groups, particularly young adults and children.  The committee also reviewed membership figures from 1999 through 2004 to verify how much our membership has been declining/increasing through the years.
*Member Survey - After conducting a review of costs, a member interest questionnaire was created and sent to every Skjold Lodge household on our member listing.
*Volo Storage Unit - The Scandinavian Club in Arlington Heights closed several years ago.  Since then, lodge books, banners, etc., have been stored in a storage unit for a cost of $720 a year.  The Focus Committee recommended that the storage unit be terminated and the proposal was passed by the board.  The lodge's extra belongings are now being stored at a members home.
*Lodge Picnic
- The committee recommended that the lodge continue with the
