Carolyn and Jon Satrum traveled 1,600 miles through the Canadian Maritime provinces. The trip took them through Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, on a ferry to the province of Prince Edward Island, over a bridge 8 miles long to New Brunswick and back to Nova Scotia. The theme of the trip was mainly scenery and history. While in Lunenburg, south of Halifax, they learned about the presence of thousands of Norwegians during World War II. You can learn more about these Norwegians on page 3.
Karin Wulf Jaeger made a donation in memory of Barney Jacobson with the following note: "We all have fond memories of Barney. No one could boil codfish like he did. Keeping up with our Norwegian heritage meant a lot to Barney--A fellow Ber

Why does Sons of Norway sell insurance?

And what does that have to do with heritage and culture?
It turns out it was the other way around.
Sons of Norway was founded in 1895, by 18 Norwegian immigrants who were not U.S. citizens and could not buy insurance. They formed Sons of Norway to raise money to protect members and their families from financial hardship. Over time, its mission was expanded to include the preservation of Norwegian heritage. It all started with "group assistance plans" back in Trondheim where members paid a small amount each week and in return received free medical care for themselves and their families. It was in this spirit of real necessity that Sons of Norway was founded as a mutual assistance society. In Article III of the incorporation document it states " … to aid its members and their families in case of sickness and death, by according them financial assistance …". Not everyone wanted compulsory insurance as a requirement of membership. In 1903 there was a conflict in the organization where the Pacific Coast group had discontinued the compulsory insurance clause, an idea that the Midwest Group felt was out of the question.

The issues were resolved and today the extensive insurance offered to qualifying members provides a firm foundation and economic base from which extensive programs are carried out. Many of us do not know that all additional Fraternal expenses of Sons of Norway not covered by membership dues are paid by our Insurance Operations. This is about $500,000 each year. The financial benefits from Sons of Norway may make sense for you, whether it is life insurance, health insurance, long term health care, Medicare supplements, retirement or estate planning, or a variety of investment options. Our District's Area Manager is Greg Ragan. Greg's information is found in each issue of Viking Magazine. That information doesn't include Greg's e-mail address which is gregragan@aol.com. Please contact Greg at 1-800-442-4146 to see if the broad range of Financial Benefits from Sons of Norway meets needs in your life. You can learn more in an expanded version of this article at our web site at http://www.skjoldlodge.com/current/insurance.html. We will be receiving insurance information from Minneapolis and will have it at all meetings.
