October is Foundation Month--by Arthur Kleven

The Sons of Norway Foundation was established in 1966 for the purpose of collecting funds by bequests, donations and gifts to be used for charitable, scientific, literary and educational endeavors in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans.

The foundation has awarded over 250 scholarships worth over $600,000.  In 2005, Skjold Lodge made one of its largest contributions to the Foundation and 2 people received bronze pins for their individual contributions.  You read about "levels of membership" pins in the June issue of "Viking" magazine. They are "Supporter": $90, "Friend": $180, "Patron": $365, "Bronze Circle": $1,000, ""Silver Circle": $2,500, "Gold Circle": $5,000, "Platinum Circle": $10,000.  You can also donate lesser amounts, and any donation is appreciated.

Should you wish to specifically designate that the money go to the "Barney Jacobson Memorial Scholarship Fund", please make that additional notation on your check.  Contact Arthur Kleven, Foundation Director, for details: 950 E.

Wilmette Road, Condo 312, Palatine, Il 60074, 847-705-9937.
Other specific designations can be made.  Contact Arthur Kleven for a donation form.  The form is also available at the Sons of Norway web site.  Go to "About Us", "Forms", and select "Charitable Gift Form".

Please consider a donation to the Foundation this year.  Donation checks should be made out to "Sons Of Norway Foundation" and the donation form and check mailed to Arthur Kleven by October 1, 2005 to ensure that those qualifying for level of membership pins will receive their pins at the banquet.

Cindy Olson, International Director of Sons of Norway Foundation, and North Park University's Dr. Charles Peterson will speak at our Foundation Banquet on October 22, 2005.  See page 4 for details about the banquet.

Scholarship deadlines are March
1st and Grant deadlines as soon as January.  Look for more details in the November-December issue of Skjold News.

School in Norway.
Now that you are all settled into the school year, let's talk about school in Norway.  You will find that your school experience shares many similarities.

Students in Norway must attend 10 years of school, starting at the age of six.  The grade levels are divided in this manner:  Lower Primary - 1st thru 4th grade, Upper Primary- 5th thru 7th grade, and Lower Secondary - 8th thru 10th grade.  The subjects taught are: Religion & Ethical education, Norwegian, English, Math, Social Studies, Arts & Crafts, Science and the Environment, Music, Home Economics, Physical Education.

Other bits of information:

Letter grades are not awarded until 7th or 8th grade.  In some situations, a student may have the same teacher for several years.
It is not unusual for children of different ages to be taught in the same classroom where the school population is small.  According to the Norwegian Ministry of Education, this accounts for 40% of schools!
My "source" in Oslo notes that most children walk to school well equipped with backpacks and cell phones!

------what is the same, and what is different with your school experience?--------------
