Did you receive your November-December issue of Skjold News "late"?  We have no good explanation.  Kate Bilodeau's copy showed up almost 3 weeks after she dropped all the issues off at the post office.  I guess that is one of the hazards of using bulk mail to make mailing of Skjold News affordable.

And again in March
In March, we will know why.  Based on the schedule of the editor (can you spell "Snow Bird"), Skjold News will be delivered to the post office about March 6, hopefully arriving in people's homes in mid-March.

THANK YOU.
Thanks to everyone who submitted articles, suggested ideas for topics, and those who helped with proofreading in 2005 .--The Editor

Apologies to Judy and Ted

In previous issues your editor forgot to put in 2 news articles and a holiday greeting from long time loyal contributors to Skjold News, Judy and Ted Torgersen.  Their holiday greeting is included in this issue.

REVIEW OF CULTURAL PROGAMS IN 2005
By Kate Bilodeau

This year, as Cultural Director, I presented some new programs at lodge meetings and promoted a program outside the lodge.  The outside program was a November seminar on Norwegian genealogy held at the Mount Prospect Public Library.  Over 40 people attended thanks to publicity by Ann Shaunessey, Genealogy Librarian at MPPL.  Blaine Hedlund, of the Vesterheim Genealogy Center in Madison, Wisconsin was our speaker. Blaine presented a comprehensive talk on resources available for research.

Our final program for the year was our annual Heritage Fest.  The Fest was moved last year to the St. Mark Church Center.  Presenting the Fest in a larger venue proved to be very successful and it was decided to have the Fest at the Center this year.  As with all large events, success is dependent on the help of the lodge members donating their time and expertise.  To all of those who worked on publicity, setting up, decorating, demonstrating and selling, thank you very much.  It would be impossible to do this without all of you.

For 2006, our cultural programs will focus on the history of Norway and its emergence into the 21st century as an economic force and humanitarian leader in the world.

WE REMEMBER
John W. "Jack" Schaad III
March 12, 1925 -October 4, 2005
John W. "Jack" Schaad III, 80, of Arlington Heights for 52 years, was the husband of Norma, nee Skogen; father of John "Jay" (Cheryl) Schaad IV and Joy
Schaad; brother-in-law of Janet Skogen and Grace (Erich) Herrmann; and fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was a World War II Air Force veteran who was a Second Lieutenant Pilot certified for B17 and B24 aircraft. He retired as supervisor in the station electrical engineering department of Commonwealth Edison in Chicago after 39 years of service. He was a Golden Member of Sons of Norway-Skjold Lodge, joining in 1971; Scandinavian Collectors Club; American Legion Post #118; and Norge Ski Club.
His wife, Norma, is a member of Skjold Lodge.

Bjarne Kristiansen
The October 30, 2005 Chicago Tribune had the obituary for Skjold Lodge member
Bjarne Kristiansen.  The family has asked for memorials in lieu of flowers to be given to the Children's Center for Autism, 188 S. Northwest Highway, Suite 203a, Cary, Illinois, 60013.  Bjarne was a member of the Norwegian Air Force and received some of his training in the United States.  7 members of Skjold Lodge attended Bjarne's funeral.
