Hurrah for the 17th of May! I am writing this after returning from marching in the parade. It was a beautiful day on Sunday May 21st - no rain! - for the Norwegian Constitution Day Parade in Park Ridge. We had a good turnout including Gene and Tordis Kaczmarek, Ted and Judy Torgersen as well as Judy's daughter Cindy and her family, Jostein Bakken, Lisa Christopher, Jon Satrum, Ann Shabez, and most of the Amacks, who make up a parade just by themselves.
Two Norwegian men also joined us. Thanks to Knut Sjurseth, his American wife, Kathryn Spindler, their Norwegian dog, Colin, and also Knut's friend Kjell-Edmund Ims. Knut's bunad was from the county of Rogaland in the southwest of Norway. Knut contacted us after learning at our web site about Skjold Lodge and the parade.
A special thanks goes out to Vice-President Wendell Brenner for setting up a membership table in the park and talking to people about joining Skjold Lodge.
We marched about a mile and a half to City Hall carrying great looking Skjold banners and American and Norwegian flags. Jon Satrum helped out with his red convertible--thanks Jon. A lot of people lined the streets as we walked to City Hall,

and Norwegian flags were everywhere. Quite a few Skjold Lodge members cheered us on from the street. It was a thrill to walk in front of the viewing stand where the dignitaries where seated, including Norwegian Honorary Consul Paul Anderson and his wife, Grand Marshals Rob and Evy Alsaker, and this year's special guest Olav Gunnar Bolla, Vice President of the Odelsting, the lower house of the Storting, and his wife Heidi, who is also a member of the Odelsting. As we walked by, the Master of Ceremonies Lynn Sove Maxson called out our names. I felt a swell of pride at that moment.
The week surrounding the 17th of May Parade is always very busy for Skjold Lodge. Our meeting on May 19th featured Norwegian baking. Jon Satrum and Judy Torgersen showed us how to make krumkake, and Lois Amack and Lillian Berge demonstrated the art of making lefse. This hands-on event got everybody out of their seats watching and then participating in the baking themselves. We want everyone at Skjold to know how to bake krumkake and lefse. Of course, we ate the food as fast as it was cooked, and it was delicious.
On Saturday May 20th a dinner was held (Continued on page 3)
