KOMMENTAR (Continued from page 1)
at the Elk's Club in Des Plaines to honor our guests from Norway, Olav Gunnar Bolla and his wife Heidi Sorensen. We have to step back and realize how remarkable it is that the government of Norway would think enough of us Norwegian-Americans in far-away Chicago to send such high-ranking dignitaries to stand with us at the 17th of May parade. Mr. Bolla gave a short talk in impeccable English and stated that the Foreign Ministry of Norway might help us out financially in restoring the Viking ship and finding a permanent place to put it on display. That would be a great gesture of fraternal help from Norway.
Our District 5 Convention was held June 7 - 10 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The five delegates from Skjold Lodge were: Gregg LeDuc, Wendell Brenner, Lorraine Brenner, Judy Torgersen, and Jim Severson. The alternates were Lester Amack, Lois Amack, and Ted Torgersen. All the delegates got together with Counselor Jostein Bakken at Ted and Judy Torgersen's home on Friday May 26th to go over the procedures to expect at the convention. We wanted to be prepared.

We hope you enjoy this issue of Skjold News and the variety of articles submitted by our members. You get a good sense of what is going on in the lodge and a chance to learn a little about Norway and Norwegian culture. We also try to have something for both children and adults. In this issue we take a whole page for "Kids Corner" targeted at children who are a bit older. An adult may have to read it to younger children. Hopefully it is interesting reading for our adult members as well. While it mentions a little about a child's school day in Norway, an upcoming issue will have a much more detailed article on the school system in Norway. Several of you found the article and previous program about Norwegians in Hawaii interesting. Now the Norwegian Ambassador to the U.S. has visited Maui and the bautastein. Read more in the article on page 4.
