Social Snakk by Lorrie Brenner

COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE NEEDED for the September 22nd Skjold News Benefit, October Foundation Night, and November Heritage Fest.  Please place your names on the sign-up sheets at our upcoming meetings - we need your help!

Our lodge has had lots of fun things for members to do this year and more activities and events are coming.

We had a really nice turn out and a perfect day for the Syttende Mai Parade in Park Ridge.  Plans are already underway for next year.  We are considering a float and having a food and beverage table at the park as well.

At the May meeting, in addition to the delicious treats (heart-shaped waffles with your choice of lingonberry jam or gjetost;
chocolate Bavarian squares and other goodies) brought by Tordis Kaczmarek and Anne Shabez, demonstrations were given by Lois Amack and Lillian Berge on the fine art of lefse rolling and flipping, and Jon Satrum and Judy Torgersen on the delicate style of krumkake shaping.  M-m-m-m   m-m-m . . . finger licking good!  Thank you to our willing and very able cooking teachers!

We hope that you were able to attend the
Summer Picnic at Scandinavian Park on June 10th and the annual golf outing on June 17th  or joined the golfers for lunch afterwards.

Snakker du Norsk?  At our
June 23rd meeting we brushed up on our Norwegian with the patient instruction of Karen Aukland and her presentation of "Norwegian words and phrases for travelers".  The evening's goodies were brought to you by Lorrie Brenner and Karli Barber.

The July 28th meeting will be at our new location: Bethel Lutheran Church at 3839 W. Frontage Rd. in Palatine. Visit their website at www.bethelutheran.org.   Pastor James Frank is an extremely kind man and I know we will be very happy with our new place.  While we sip our hot coffee, tea, or ice cold lemonade, and feast on Jim and Rick Severson's after meeting snacks, Lynn Maxson of Trollhaugen Lodge will present "Summer in Norway".  Lynn spent last summer in Norway and has a lot of interesting stories and knowledge to share with us!

Bring your love of art and a painting smock  to our
August 25th meeting.  While we enjoy treats compliments of Marian Seaholm, you can try rosemaling while Lorraine Straw, a new Skjold member and an accomplished rosemaler, demonstrates this decorative painting style and talks about its history.  Learn how you can spice up many items in your home, inside and out, with this fun hobby.

SKJOLD NEWS BENEFIT:  Instead of a meeting on September 22nd, , we will be having our annual Skjold News Bene

Barnebirkie Report:
Thank you to all our lodge members who baked cookies for the Barnebirkie.  Thanks also Gene and Tordis Kaczmarek and Jostein Bakken who represented Skjold Lodge while working as volunteers at the Barnebirkie as well as taking our cookies to Wisconsin.

5th District Recreation Director, Darlene Arneson also sent the following about the event:

  • Total Skiers: 1,292
  • Total Cookies: 1,429 1/2 dozen = 17,154 cookies!
  • Number of lodges providing cookies = 31
  • Total Volunteers: 62 registered with Sons of Norway
  • But more members were there.

It was a tremendous event and we thank all of the volunteers who came to Hayward and Cable, those who made or sent cookies, those who encouraged youth to participate in the event, and to the lodges that take on the major responsibilities for registration, volunteer reception and coordinating all of the parts that make the Barnebirkie a success!  We truly appreciate everyone's efforts and look forward to the 2007 event.
