Har Du Hørt

Christmas Party: 71 Members and guests had a fun afternoon at the Mt. Prospect Golf Club with good food, music provided by Les Amack and Les and Lois' daughter and son-in law (Lorrie and Wendell Brenner), and singing  while we walked around the juletre.

Santa was there and the children enjoyed receiving presents.  It is always fun when members get together for any reason.  Christmas just makes it special.

Carolyn and
Jon Satrum returned from Maui where they enjoyed a break from the winter weather.  While there, thanks to information provided by Mariann Erlenbach from Leif Erikson Lodge, they were able to participate in a commemoration ceremony and banquet celebrating the arrival of Norwegians in the Hawaiian Islands in 1881.  Jon hopes to have an article ready for the May-June issue of Skjold News where you can learn more about Norwegians in Hawaii.

Book Report--"Astri My Astri" by Jon Satrum

"Astri My Astri" By Debra Nelson Gourley.
If you enjoy your connection to Norway and your family's history and you are interested in the Norwegian language, especially when you can also read the English counterpart to the words, you will enjoy "Astri My Astri".

"Astri, My Astri: Norwegian Heritage Stories" is a collection of sixteen Norwegian heritage stories published in both English and Norwegian. Although based on Debra's
7/8 Norwegian ancestry, the stories touch anyone who has an interest in Norwegian heritage, culture, genealogy, or bilingual studies.

The stories take you on a journey from immigrating in the 1840s to the discovery of an immigrant trunk more than one hundred years later and the subsequent unraveling of a rich family history. Among the topics included are the Last Sioux Uprising of 1862, the great flu epidemic of 1918, hiking above the Arctic Circle, the heavy water assault during World War II, Norwegian rosemaling and bunader, Syttende Mai, stave churches, founding of a Norwegian Lutheran church in America, and the life of Snowshoe Thompson.

I had an opportunity to attend a conference where Debra described a heritage journey in her life that ended up becoming this book.  When she was done, I knew I wanted a copy for myself so I could read everything in detail.

Each story , while connected to all of the others, can be read as a unique short story of its own.  The stories are written both in English and Norwegian so you have the opportunity to compare how words and phrases are used in both languages.  Also the Norwegian version of a story is not just a "direct" translation but is re-written by someone fluent in Norwegian who writes the story the way a Norwegian would have written it.

This book would make a wonderful gift the next time you travel to Norway or for anyone interested in both languages or just family history.  A reader in either language can enjoy the book, without knowing the "other" language.

Debra has a great website where you can learn more about the book and how to contact her.  http://www.astrimyastri.com/.
