SPRING

Gregg LeDuc

We have filled our slate of 2006 officersWendell Brenner is our Vice-President, and John Halversen is our Cultural director. Tusen Takk for taking these important positions.

Our 2006 schedule of programs is coming together.
In March our program was about Norwegians in Hawaii.  For those of you who missed the meeting, an article is included on page 4.   At our May meeting members will demonstrate how to bake lefse and krumkake.  This is a hands-on event.  We want everyone to get out of their chairs and come up to the tables and learn how to make lefse and krumkake from scratch.  The more people involved, the better.  Our June meeting is tentatively scheduled to be "Basic Norwegian Language For Travelers".  We will practice basic phrases and pronunciation, learn how to greet people and  introduce ourselves, and ask a few questions while shopping.  Yes, we know most Norwegians speak good English, but knowing a little Norwegian just makes you a better person.   We can only do so much in 20-30 minutes, but it should be fun.

Spring is here, the weather is getting nice, and now is the time to get back in shape.  Read
Jim Severson's Sports Medal article on page 3 and learn how easy it is to turn those activities into medals.  There is

something for everyone.

Some of our most important events are coming up in May, June, and August.

Syttende Mai, Norwegian Constitution Day, is part of our heritage.  Each May, Skjold Lodge marches in the annual Syttende Mai (17 of May) parade in Park Ridge, Illinois.  This year's parade is on Sunday, May 21st.  The parade kicks off at Talcott and Cumberland by Nelson's Funeral Home, 820 W. Talcott Rd. and finishes at City Hall where you can enjoy food and crafts and join in the GRAND MARCH!  Marchers can park at Nelson's Funeral Home.  See additional details on page 2.

Please join us as we march on this day of Norwegian pride.  Wear traditional dress or anything red, white, and blue.  We line up at 12 Noon. The parade starts at 1PM.  Look for other members near the funeral home.  Details will be at our web site.

This year's special guest from Norway is Mr. Olav Gunnar Bolla,
Vice President of the Odelsting, the lower house of the Storting.

We also have two conventions coming up.  Five Skjold members will attend the District 5 Convention in LaCrosse, Wisconsin,

from June 7th to 10th..  The International Convention will be in Vancouver British, Columbia, in  August.

This year we make the
Midsommer Fest at Vasa Park on June 10 our summer picnic.  Read more about it in Lorrie Brenner's article on page 5.  Please join us for a fun day!

A final note:  the May meeting will be on May 19th, which is the third Friday, rather than May 26th

Hilsen,
Gregg LeDuc
President
