FROM YOUR SOCIAL DIRECTOR

God Dag and Mange Takk to Judy Torgersen & Jean Bowles for bringing treats to the March Lodge Meeting! I wish I could have been there, but my foot needed more healing time.

M-m-m-m-m good . . . April was Potluck month - there are some (
me included) who would like every lodge meeting to be potluck - ja, sure, you betcha . . . who doesn't enjoy the delicious selections from a smorgasbord? Takk to all who brought their specialties!

At May's meeting we will be treated to delicious goodies from
Marge Wittrock & Tordis Kaczmarek and have hands on demonstrations of the fine art of making some fresh, delicious lefse and krumkake for all to sample.

And in June, please come to our:

dinavian Week in Hawaii.

You can learn more about Norwegians in Hawaii from several sources including: a 4-page article in the July and August 1974 issues of Viking Magazine;
"Norwegian Labor In Hawaii - the Norse Immigrants" by Eleanor H. and Carl D. Davis; "Pau Hana - Plantation Life and Labor in Hawaii" by Ronald Takaki; and the "Aloha -- Fra Glemte Nordmenn Pa Hawaii Fra Slaveliv til Ferieparadis (Aloha from forgotten Norwegians living in Hawaii from life in slavery to life in a vacation paradise)" by Torbjorn Greipsland.  Greipsland's book is written in Norwegian but includes a 64 page condensed version in English.  Additional information is available on the Internet at http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=beta1 which includes a picture of the Beta, and at http://www.immigrantships.net/v4/1800v4/musca18810514.html with information about the ship Musca, including the ship's passenger list.  In June of that year another ship, the bark Cedar arrived in Honolulu from Bremen, Germany.  Some Norwegians were on that ship as well.  Bark Cedar information is on the Internet at http://www.immigrantships.net/v4/1800v4/cedar18810618.html.

Internet articles about the "bautastein" are at: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2006/Jan/26/ln/FP601260355.html and

This year we are making the Midsommer Fest at Vasa Park (now called Scandinavian Park) OUR summer picnic as well.

It will be our Sangt Hans Day. This is the inaugural celebration of the holiday important to all five Scandinavian countries at the Park and a great time to get family members together. So far, the activities include a maypole raising, pony rides, Viking displays and games, traditional kids' crafts, an evening picnic accompanied by live acoustic music, and nighttime bonfires along the river. A dance instructor will be available to help all of us participate in easy group folk dancing accompanied by live traditional music. It would be great if some of you Leikerringen dancers could come out to help us.

Bring your own food and beverages. We'd like to know how many people to plan for, so please call Dave Nordin at (630)420-2952 or e-mail him at dave@nordinsturino.com and give him your name, phone number, and number of people who will attend.

As always, check our website, maintained by our webmaster, Jon Satrum, at http://www.skjoldlodge.com for news, updates, and information on current/future events.

Fraternally yours till we meet again,
Lorrie Brenner
