Kommentar Fra Presidenten

September was a very busy month for Skjold Lodge.  We kicked it off with the annual Scandinavian Day festival at Scandinavian Park on September 10th.  Our lodge had both a membership table and a food table, where we sold pølse in lefse, baked goods, coffee and water.  Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate.  It rained the whole day making us feel like we were right back in Bergen.  Didn't we all leave Norway to get away from the rain?  In spite of the bad weather, the event went remarkably well.  We sold a lot of food, met many new people, and renewed some old acquaintances.  I feel the activities at Scandinavian Park were much better this year than previously.  A group called Norsa, Inc., was there.  They portray Viking age living history, including the great battle at York, England, in 1066 between the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons.  It was extremely interesting.  Of course, we know what happened at that battle.  This year the Park also had pony rides for children, which I think makes this event a lot more family friendly.  We all had a good time, and this event has gotten even better.

On September 16th we had a membership breakfast, which we have not had in quite a long time.  Skjold members pitched in and made a delicious breakfast for our guests.  I gave a very brief talk on how Sons of Norway is all about preserving and pro

moting our Scandinavian heritage and culture.  Then I asked some Skjold members to talk more specifically on various aspects of the Sons of Norway, such as the Foundation, the scholarships, the summer youth camp, and insurance.                                                        I want to thank everyone who took time off on a Saturday to come out and help us.  I especially want to thank our Vice-President and Membership Chairman Wendell Brenner and his wife Lorrie for organizing the entire event.  You did a great job. Tusen Takk.

Our Skjold News Benefit on September 22nd was a resounding success.  We had a great turnout of Skjold members in spite of thunderstorms and tornados.   The evening started off with a catered dinner organized by
Tordis Kaczmarek followed by desserts, made by our own members, which were especially good and disappeared quickly.  The highlight of the evening was the auction to benefit Skjold News.  Mike Hanson, our auctioneer, made this auction a lot of fun and an incredible success, raising quite a bit of money to help pay for the production and distribution of Skjold News.  His dry sense of humor and  his classic Norwegian jokes made everyone laugh.  Where would the world be without Norwegian humor?  Thanks to Gene and Tordis
