Har Du Hørt

We extend our deepest sympathy to Skjold member Lorraine Cummings and her family on the death of U.S. Marine Cpl. Ryan Cummings of Streamwood, who was killed in Iraq on June 3. His grandparents are Lorraine and Robert Cummings of Schaumburg. Lorraine said, "He was proud to be a Marine, and proud to serve his country."

Ryan, 22, was an honor student at Hoffman Estates High School and joined the Marines right out of school in 2002. He served two tours of duty in Iraq and then volunteered for a third. He died when his armored vehicle was overturned by a roadside bomb outside of Falujah.

During a recent visit to Chicago, President Bush took time to give special thanks to Cummings' family. "Our prayers go out to Ryan's family," Bush said. "I marvel at the strength of his mother when she said he wanted to be doing something that made a difference. He was doing what he wanted to do."

In response to Bush's comments, Ryan's father, John Cummings said, "It made me feel very proud. It helps with the suffering we've been going through."

Cpl. Cummings was buried with full military honors in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, in Elwood, Illinois. We recognize his courageous sacrifice and honor his memory with our deepest respect and appreciation.

Tordis Kaczmarek is proud to announce the birth of her first great-grandchild, a boy named Tate Bradley Sievers, 9 lbs. 4 oz., born to grand-daughter Tracey and husband Bradley Sievers on July 19 in Frisco, Texas. The grandparents are Tordis' daughter Denise and husband Randy Smith. Congratulations on this happy occasion!

Gene and Tordis were in Fort Wayne, Indiana again the first week-end in June. It was a special visit to see the high school graduation of Tordis' granddaughter. The ceremony was held in the Coliseum in the heart of Fort Wayne. The young granddaughter, Ann Dutkiewicz, will attend Purdue in the fall of this year. Also in attendance was Tordis' daughter, Denise, and family from Plano, Texas. A reception for family and friends was held on the lawn the following Sunday.

5th DISTRICT CONVENTION

Thank you for the privilege of representing Skjold Lodge at the 5th District convention in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, this past June.  Sons of Norway conventions are always very interesting and the delegates work hard on behalf of all members.  We accomplished a lot.  We also had some fun time.  This convention we cruised on a paddleboat down the Mississippi.  Enjoyable, but TOO COLD - Brrrr.

Thanks again, Judy Torgersen
