Happy New Year!

together.  Without their hard work, this event would never have gotten off the ground.  Everything came together without a hitch.  We even had heat.  Secondly, I want to give a heartfelt thanks to all our members who spent days cooking and baking so Skjold could have something to sell.  So many people helped us that I am sure I will forget to mention somebody.  But just for starters, here is a Thank You!  To Lois Amack, Karli Barber, Lorrie Brenner, Tordis Kaczmarek, Anne Meland, Jon Satrum, Kathy Secora and Anne Shabez.  The lapskaus and the pea soup were great and so Norwegian. Let's, please, have these at every Norwegian event.  Our Heritage Fest presented so many Norwegian cultural themes it is hard to know where to start.  But let's mention Bob Bolstad and Lillian Berge, who showed us how to make fresh lefse.  It tasted good, Lillian, and, suddenly, I felt a lot more Norwegian after I ate your lefse.  Keep up the good work. Jon Satrum made fresh krumkake and had to keep supplying the baked goods table because it sold so fast.  I want to thank the "Jul Hus" of Rockford for bringing a multitude of Scandinavian gift items.  Wendell Brenner and John Halvorsen did a wonderful job at the membership table.  They spent a great deal of time talking to prospective members and explaining the benefits of joining Skjold Lodge.  Thankfully, John is a lawyer, so he knows how to talk.  I want to thank Kay Overland for her display of Hardanger embroidery.  Everything looked so beautiful.  The display of wood carv

Fall is always a very busy time for Skjold Lodge.  We kicked off October with a wreath-laying ceremony in Humboldt Park at the statue of the first European to discover the New World.  That's right, Leif Erickson.  The festivity was conducted by the Norwegian National League and members of Skjold Lodge proudly participated.

Our program at the October Lodge meeting was Norwegian bingo conducted by Jim Van Winkle of Polar Star Lodge.  Jim actually invented this game himself. Talk about the genius of the Norwegian-American people. Of course, it is structured like regular bingo, but all the questions related to Norwegian history, language, culture, food, and clothing.  We used little Norwegian flags to put on the squares.  Jim kept the game fun and fast-paced and completely focused on Norwegian values.  When you got bingo, you won a small gift.  Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun with this.  Mange tusen takk, Jim.  Everything was great.

Wow!  Our Heritage Fest was such a great success.  So many Skjold members helped us.  Where do I start?  I can't thank them enough.  Special Tusen Takks have to go out to
Judy and Ted Torgersen and Jean Bowles who spent countless hours and many phone calls putting this great event
