Har Du Hørt

Bob had a stroke not long ago, and is working at recovering his memory. He and Karin are able to go out visiting, and recently spent an enjoyable afternoon with friends at the Skjold Lodge Heritage Fest in Palatine.

Gene and Tordis Kaczmarek did some traveling during recent months. In October they flew to Dallas, Texas, for the christening of Tordis' great grandson Tate. After the service in the church, the family and friends were invited to a popular Italian restaurant to celebrate the occasion. A few weeks later Gene and Tordis flew to Daytona Beach, Florida, to visit Gene's younger brother who is having serious health problems. They returned home to spend a few days before traveling to Fort Wayne, Indiana to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with Tordis' family. We are grateful to have them back home safe and sound after their extensive travels.

Missing/Late Newsletters:  Several people called to say they did not receive the November-December issue of  Skjold News or received them late - We double-checked.  The "short version" is that all newsletters were mailed to the correct addresses.

UPDATE: As we are sending this to the printers we learned that some members received their news letters six weeks after the letters were delivered to the Post Office.  We have no good explanation of what happened.  Any extra copies of each issue are given to, and are available from, our Membership Chairman, Wendell Brenner.

Jill Crooker was in Göteborg, Sweden to attend the tri-annual "Nordlek Folk Dance Festival".  It was one week of Scandinavian folk dancing which included crafts, dance and music workshops, and evening dance parties.  All the Scandinavian countries participated.  The closing ceremony was so beautiful with all the many folk costumes and all 2,000 persons folk dancing.  After the festival, Jill visited family and friends in Ornskoldsvik , Malmö, and Stockholm, and had a side trip to Denmark.

We had a nice note from Harriet Pedersen in Yellville, Arkansas.
Harriet writes--"Dear Skjold Lodge.  Once again my sincere thanks for the Skjold newspaper.  As I've said before, I really enjoy hearing of all of the news up yonder.  As I reside in Arkansas, I never hear of anything Norwegian, in fact, I sometimes think I'm the only 'Norske' here.  Enclosed is a little token to keep the paper in my direction.  Keep up the excellent work.--Harriet A. Pedersen--An old life member from Leif Erikson Lodge.  There are a few old times I still fondly remember from both lodges!".

Thank you Harriet for thinking of us and for your donation to the newsletter!

Karin Wulf-Jaeger, and husband Bob,  recently hosted a visit from cousin Raold Nydal, who came in from Bergen for a couple of weeks, from September 29 through October 9.  Soon after cousin Raold returned to Norway, Karin went on a trip to visit Vesterheim in beautiful Decorah, Iowa. Karin and Bob also enjoyed at visit recently with their son and family at their place on Apple Canyon Lake near Galena, Illinois.

BETHESDA VISIT
By Gene Kaczmarek

In an annual event, Skjold Lodge will provide treats and entertainment for the residents of Bethesda Home on Sunday, January 28, 2007.  Volunteers are needed to bake goodies and then help serve them at the home about 1:00PM.  Bethesda is located at 2833 N. Nordica Ave in Chicago.  Members who have volunteered before remark on how good they feel after providing an enjoyable day for the residents.

Call Tordis Kaczmarek at (847) 222-9244 for more information.

NOTE: MARCH-APRIL SKJOLD NEWS.
Our March-April Newsletter will arrive later than normal.  It will be delivered to the post office about March 6, hopefully arriving in people's homes starting in mid-March.

HERITAGE FEST: What a beautiful fall day it was with a nip the air and lots of sunshine for our Heritage Fest.  Many people came out to enjoy the wonderful food and entertainment. This year we had lapskaus, pea soup, rice pudding, fruit soup and waffles. Thank you to all our members who contributed delicious cookies and breads to our bake sale.

Everyone  had fun watching the rosemaling, lefse and krumkake demonstrations and strolling around the various exhibits of woodcarving, knitting and hardanger.

The "Jul Hus" from Rockford Illinois was with us again this

year with many interesting Norwegian items for sale.

Thank you to Ray Nilson for being our strolling minstrel for the day entertaining us with fantastic accordion music. What a turn out for our bunad show where we learned about the background behind all the beautiful costumes. Many of these models were part of the "Leikarringen Heimhug" dance group who brought a wonderful close to the day with a performance of different folk dances. The Heritage Fest couldn't have been the success it was without our terrific volunteers who worked behind the scenes. We appreciate all of your hard work. Looking forward to another wonderful "Heritage Fest 2007.
Judy Torgersen and Committee.
