BARNEY JACOBSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER.

Congratulations to Rebekah Kronborg-Mogil from Park Ridge, Illinois, who has been chosen as the recipient of the Barney Jacobson Memorial Scholarship for 2006.  Rebekah, whose mother, Barbra Kronborg-Mogil, and her grandparents, William and Alfhild Kronborg, are all members of Skjold Lodge, is a student at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.  Rebekah is majoring in Early Childhood Education, with a minor in Music and her long term goals are to become a preschool or kindergarten teacher, as well as to teach violin lessons to children and to play in a community orchestra.

E-MAIL SPAM
Skjold Lodge Addresses deleted.

Like most users of e-mail, Skjold Lodge receives massive amounts of "spam" (unwanted, unsolicited, e-mail).  It has gotten so bad that even with special filters to block as much as possible, reading our e-mail has become a real pain.
One day we had over 300 e-mails and ONLY 3 were valid!

WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO:

  1. Increase the "strength" of our e-mail filtering.  This could mean that your perfectly valid e-mail would be filtered out and not read promptly, or possibly missed.
  2. Eliminate all but 2 Skjold Lodge E-mail addresses (postmaster@skjoldlodge.com) and webmaster@skjoldlodge.com). We may have to change or delete these as well.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP US:
  1. Unless you are confident that your PC is secure and virus free, delete any Skjold Lodge e-mail address you have in the address book on your PC.  If you want to send an e-

mail to the addresses mentioned here, please type them in manually.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP EVERYBODY:

  1. If you get spam email that you think is deceptive, forward it to spam@uce.gov. The FTC uses the spam stored in this database to pursue law enforcement actions against people who send deceptive email.  You can learn more about this at http://www.ftc.gov/spam/.
  2. If you don't have anti-virus software on your PC, buy and install it.  Without it you may be part of the problem, as your PC can become compromised.  Recent Windows XP and Macintosh computers also have built in "firewalls"--use them.  If you can afford it, buy and install a firewall if you don't  have a standard one on your computer.
  3. Don't open e-mails from any address you don't recognize, especially if it contains an ATTACHMENT, a PICTURE,  or a request to view a "greeting card".
  4. Don't forward "well meaning" e-mails that others have asked you to forward.  Most people don't really want this stuff, and at that point you are part of the problem and are for all practical purposes, creating and sending spam.

Barnebirkie: Imagine the energy of 1,300 kids, ages 3 to 13, standing on skis awaiting the sound of the starting gun for the Sons of Norway/Swiss Miss® Barnebirkie cross-country ski race for kids. The excitement - and noise - is exhilarating as each participant anticipates his or her 1-, 2.5- or 5-kilometer event.  The children will participate in the 21st Annual ski races held in Hayward, Wisconsin on Thursday, February 22, 2007.  Sons of Norway Districts 1 and 5 will be co-sponsoring the event and will supply the cookies for the young skiers. If you wish to donate cookies, place them in non-returnable containers (shoe boxes, etc.) and call Gene Kaczmarek (847) 222-9244 to arrange pickup by mid-February, 2007.  Not a baker--no problem. We accept purchased cookies, too, but the home-made ones are really a hit with the children, the support staff, and all who eat them.
