HELP WANTED! - by Jon Satrum
2008 Skjold News Editor / Lodge Webmaster.

2007 will be my last year as Skjold News Editor and as the webmaster of www.skjoldlodge.com.  I've had a lot of fun doing it, but I am having a dickens of a time fitting everything into my life.

Now is a good time to start transitioning others into these roles.  If you think you would be a good candidate, contact our President, Gregg LeDuc, or give me a call if you would like to learn more.  Here is my take on the profile of a good candidate:

First: In a perfect world, it really works well if one person is both the Editor AND Webmaster, as a lot of the information is used for both purposes.  When you learn of something, you can quickly update the website and also use the information for the newsletter for the next issue.  But of course each job can be done by a different person.

Second: Knowledge about the lodge and our activities is helpful.

You do not have to live in or near Chicago (Leif Erikson Lodge's editor is in Florida!).  A PC, an Internet connection and access to a USPS bulk mailing facility is all you need and, if needed, printing could still be done in Chicago, even if the editor is someplace else.

Look for more about this in the March-April issue where we discuss the software tools we are using.  There are also lodges who do their entire newsletter by cutting a pasting items into a master and then photocopy the entire letter.  There are lots of possibilities.

Språk og kultur -
Language and Culture
Pod casts
One of the hardest things about learning a new language is getting exposure to it. Hearing native speakers using natural language is key to building fluent listening skills. NRK, the Norwegian state broadcasting service, has a new, free tool that students of the Norwegian language will want to check out - pod casts. A pod cast is simply a radio show saved to a digital audio file that can be downloaded from the internet. Pod casts differ from traditional net radio in that you can download and save a pod cast, burn it to a CD or even listen to it on an MP3 player like an iPod.
NRK offers several of their programs for free at www.nrk.no/podkast. Some of our favorites are Filmpolitiet, a weekly re

view of new movies, Norgesglasset, a variety show focusing loosely on Norwegian culture and Språkteigen, a half hour
program on Norwegian language starring linguistic celebrity Sylfest Lomheim. You can also find a variety of other news and entertainment programs.
Despite the name, you don't need an iPod to listen to a pod cast. All you need is a computer, a good internet connection and an audio program like iTunes, which is available for free for both Macintosh and PC from www.apple.com/itunes.
The easiest way to subscribe to NRK pod casts is to open up www.nrk.no/podkast in your internet browser and copy the link of the show you want to listen to. Then switch over to iTunes, go the menu called "Advanced" and choose "Subscribe to pod cast." Just paste the link into the window that comes up, hit "OK" and your computer will automatically download the latest edition of that show.
