Cultural Skills Program
By Solveig Bender

Participating in your heritage helps create a greater connection to it.  One way to do this is to study one of your areas of interest.  We make that easier for you with Sons of Norway's cultural skills program.

To participate, you learn/demonstrate your skills in one or more areas of your choosing.  Each area of study has progressively more difficult levels.  Pins are awarded for the successful completion of each track or level as demonstrated by the results of tests, or the submission of documentation, as evidence of completion.

Learn how to earn an award on Page 5 using an example of "Reading Norwegian and Norwegian/North American Authors".

You may wish to team up with other members who are also working in your area of study.  A great example is Norwegian cooking where you can plan meals together.

Areas of study include: 1. Traditional Norwegian Cooking, 2. Reading Norwegian and Norwegian-American Authors, 3. Collecting Norwegian and North American Stamps, 4. Norwegian Rosemåling, 5. Genealogy--Family History, 6. Hand Knitting, 7. Norwegian Language and Culture, 8. Hardanger Embroidery, 9. Figure Carving, 10. Weaving, 11. Ornamental Woodcarving, 12. Chip Carving, 13. Folk Dancing, 14. Music and Musicians of Norway.

There are also youth activities which include: Unit 3: Collecting Norwegian & North American Stamps, Unit 8: Hardanger Embroidery, and Unit 6: Hand Knitting.

Velkommen
New
Skjold members

New Skjold members include:

Anne Shabez's daughter, Lisa Shabez; her son David Shabez, his wife Peggy; and their children, Jacob and Jamie.

The Suri family, Joanne
and Mark, and their daughters, Dana, Diedre, and Sara. The three girls will be attending Masse Moro (which means "lots of fun" in Norwegian) the 5th District Norwegian language and heritage camp in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, for two weeks in July.  We know they will learn a lot and make many new friends. Learn more about Masse Moro at our District 5 website www.sonsofnorway5.com.

We welcome all these new members to the lodge!
