Tordis Kaczmarek's grandson, Trent Smith, graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, receiving his diploma on Saturday, May 19, in ceremonies at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. There were 800 graduates receiving degrees, plus special awards going to Mayor and Mrs. Richard J. Daley. Tordis and Gene were there with other members of the family. Our warmest congratulations!

Carolyn and Jon Satrum spent 3 weeks touring Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Austria.  They had just completed a German class (yes Jon is still working on his Norwegian) and tried out their new skills.  German is spoken in all 4 countries, of course more so in Austria and Germany.  Similarities in German and Norwegian saved the day a few times.  2 weeks of the trip was by boat from Amsterdam to Vienna with many side trips to cities, villages, and historic areas.  One of the stops was Room 600 of the Palace of Justice where the Nuremberg War Crime Trials were held.  Jon tried to make a stop in Trøndheim to march in the Syttende Mai parade, but couldn't get the flights changed.

Marilyn Halverson attended her lag's (Hallinglag of America) annual stevne (meeting).  It was the 100th Stevne and over 200 members from Norway came to North Dakota to attend.

Les Amack won "Low Scratch Series" at our bowling outing which was part of the District 5 Bowling Tournament.

Doris and Roger Elmer, of Leif Erikson lodge, donated $25.00 for the upcoming Skjold News benefit.  Thank you Doris and Roger.

BARNEBIRKIE
Lodges in District 1 and 5 donated 1,178 DOZEN cookies for the Barnebirkie children's ski race in February.
Skjold lodge was the 3rd largest contributor with 65 dozen.  The other top 2 were 76 and 115 dozen respectively.

Programs/Social by Lorrie Brenner
Our May program was excellent.  "Norwegian Knives", presented by Perry Straw, husband of our own Lorraine Straw, introduced us to another part of our heritage few of us knew much about.  Perry has received various awards and ribbons for his knives from The Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, Iowa.  The evening's program included a large display of knives, materials for making knives, and a fascinating slide presentation on Norwegian knives.  Perry, thanks much for a great program, well attended and well received by our members.

And we have more fun programs coming up.  I am especially looking forward to "The Vikings" on
October 26, where Vera Littlejohn tells us more about our ancestors.  A Nordic ski judge for the Nordic Ski Federation since 1945 (judged at Holmenkollen in 1956), Ms. Littlejohn has multiple degrees from several universities including 2 in Sweden.  She has presented Viking seminars at the State University of New York and Rice
