"Norwegians on the Move - Rivers, Roads & Rails"
Norwegian-Americans to meet in La Crosse Area
3 Lags join together for a great experience!

You are invited to learn more about Norwegian culture and spirit at the Tre Lag Stevne (gathering) on August 1-4, 2007 in Onalaska, Wisconsin. The event is sponsored by three Norwegian-American organizations: Gudbrandsdalslaget, Nord Hedmark og Hedemarken Lag, and Trønderlag of America.

The theme for the stevne, which will be held at the Stoney Creek Inn & Conference Center, is "Norwegians on the Move - Rivers, Roads & Rails" The event is open to the public. There is a registration fee. Advance registration for meals and tours is required.  The stevne opens on Wednesday, August 1 at 1:00 pm with two separate activities: (1) a guided tour of La Crosse and Westby and (2) the opening of the Genealogy lab for research.  The tour will make stops at Accelerated Genetics, Dregne's Scandinavian Shop and the Coon Prairie Country Church. The Stevne Opening Ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm with the Genealogy lab reopening afterwards.

Genealogy labs for all three groups will be open 1-5 pm and 7:30-10 on Aug. 1, 9-4 and 8:30-10 pm on Aug. 2 and 9-11 am on Aug. 3. Trained genealogists with extensive research materials (bygdebøker, church records, various publications from Norway and U.S.) will assist participants wishing to expand their knowledge of their Norwegian family history.

Attendees can also take part in several genealogy classes which are offered on Wednesday and Thursday.  Seminars on a variety of Norwegian-American topics will be offered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Topics include: "Dr. Erik Gundersen, early Norwegian doctor", "Edvard Grieg, the Man and his Music," "The Immigrant's Trunk," "Norwegian Architecture," "Travel Routes on the Rivers," "Norwegian Settlements in the Midwest," "Learning to Sing Norwegian," "North-American Descendants of Norway's Founding Fathers (1814)," "Curds and Whey - Norwegian Cheesemaking in the New Country," "NAHA Collections that Contain Travel as a Major Element," "Woodcarving as an Expression of Norwegian Art," and "Overview of Rosemaling Styles."

Keynote speaker Howard Sherpe will present "A Norwegian Travel Adventure Saga - A Genealogical Roll of the Dice" on Friday afternoon.

Social activities of the stevne will include a cruise on the La Crosse Queen on the Mississippi River Thursday evening with entertainment by the Turkey River All Stars Dixieland band, a social hour and banquet on Friday evening with entertainment by the Norskedalen Trio of Coon Valley. Bunads are encouraged at the banquet!

Saturday's activities will include presentations, a tour and luncheon at Norskedalen with entertainment by the Sons of

Norway Dancers. Norskedalen was established in 1977 as an outdoor laboratory and arboretum. Following the closing ceremony, participants will be free to explore Norskedalen further.
Vendors of Scandinavian crafts and goods will sell their products on Thursday and Friday.  Several will provide craft demonstrations. Each of the sponsoring organizations will hold a short business meeting for members during the stevne. A Kaffe Stue will be available on Thursday and Friday to provide the opportunity to visit with others who share an interest in their Norwegian heritage. Donations of Norwegian "goodies" for the Kaffe Stue are always appreciated.

Reservations are required for the tour, dinner and banquet by July 15. Walk-in registrations will be permitted if space is available.
