July 17: Board Meeting. 7:00 pm.
July 21: Kaffe Stue.  As part of Mt. Horeb's 36th Annual Art fair, Vennelag lodge #5-513 will host their annual Kaffe Stue in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin from 9AM-2PM featuring a large smorgasbord with open face sandwiches, pølse, rosettes, berliner kranser, sandbakkelese, krumkake, søtsuppe, fattigmann, rømmegrøt.  This list just goes on and on!!!!  Join a fellow lodge for the day and have some great food.  For more information contact george@sonsofnorway5.com or 608-437-5468.
July 27: Pot Luck supper at 6:30 pm followed by regular lodge meeting at 7:30 pm.
PROGRAM: "Show and Tell/Runic Writing".  You are part of the program!  Members are encouraged to bring articles connected to their Norwegian heritage and talk about them.  Interesting items would be those associated with your family or something you have brought back to the U.S. after a trip to Norway.  In addition we will have a brief presentation on Runic writing.  Learn how to write your own name in Runic.

September 18: Board Meeting. 7:00 pm.
September 28:  Skjold News Benefit and Auction. 6:30 pm.  No regular lodge meeting on this date.  This catered supper and auction is held annually to raise funds to help defray the cost of producing and publishing the lodge newsletter throughout the year.  Members are encouraged to purchase and donate items that are worth at least $15.00  Items should be wrapped and simply indicate the place of purchase but not the content of the package.  Final details will be in our September--October issue.

PROGRAM: "Vera Elizabet Littlejohn presents THE VIKINGS", an effort to set the record straight about the realities of the lives of our ancestors.  The Vikings were the GOOD GUYS of the 9th and 10th centuries.  See also Kids Corner on page 7 of this issue of Skjold News.

CULTURAL SKILLS AWARDS

HERE'S HOW--to go about earning a cultural skills award.

While this
example is about the "Reading Norwegian and Norwegian/North American Authors" award, there are many areas to choose from (see the list on Page 1).

Unit 2: Reading Norwegian and Norwegian/North American Authors
Part 1:  Your Favorites
Select at least two books that you have wanted to read for a long time, both fiction and non-fiction
Select and read one book by a Norwegian/North American author
Select and complete one optional activity
Complete a book report
Complete a final report.

Part 2: Fiction
Select and read five books, making sure you have a variety of categories.  (i.e., novel, drama, folk tales, etc)
Select and complete optional activity
Complete a book report
Complete a final report

Part 3:  Non-fiction
Select and read five books, making sure you have a variety of categories.  Two books should be by Norwegian/North American authors.
Select and complete optional activity
Complete a book report
Complete a final report
