berni on Vancouver Island to visit relatives connected to Jon's Vinge family from Skatval, in Norway. In an interesting twist, Carolyn and Jon had passed through Port Alberni a few years ago on their way to Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park on the west side of the island, not knowing that Jon had as many as 400 relatives in the Port Alberni area. It was genealogy research that ultimately connected everyone. In 2008 we will put more emphasis on genealogy at Skjold Lodge. Solveig Bender's cultural article in this issue is about cooking, but starts to focus you on genealogy and your Norwegian heritage.
A kindness remembered: During Chicago's 17th of Mai activities, Ted Torgersen gave a 2 headed coin (bearing the images of King Haakon & King Olav ) to Olav Gunnar Ballo, a member of the Nowegian Parliament. The coin in a protective case was to be given to King Harald. Later, Ted received a nice thank you letter from Berit Tversland, Private Secretary to H.M. The King. It read, simply, "Dear Mr. Torgersen, His Majestry The King has asked me to thank you for the beautiful commemorative coin, which His Majesty was pleased to receive".

In June, Arthur Kleven, his daughter, Lisa, and grandson, Albert, visited his many cousins in southern Norway. This included Oslo, Drammen , Lier, Vestfossen, Ardal, Lærdal, Jostedal, Bergen, Sauda and Stavanger.
Unfortunately, it rained 17 days out of 21 days that he was there. The only sunny days were in Bergen. After Arthur returned, his cousin informed him of flooding in Jostedal, Drammen and Stavanger. At the same time, there was flooding in England.
In September, Arthur's cousin, Randi Aasvang and daughter, Monica, of Bergen came to Chicago. Arthur showed them the sights of Chicago also taking them to Wisconsin to visit other Norwegian-American relatives.
