Children's Songs from Norway
In Norwegian and English

We found a great web site with children's songs from around the world.  They also had several in Norwegian with music you can play.  The site is http://www.mamalisa.com/, but to go directly to Norwegian children's songs use http://www.mamalisa.com/world/norway.html

We've included the words from 3 songs.  First you have the song in Norwegian, then in English the way it would be if you changed the Norwegian words to be English words, and finally the words

they way you probably learned the song.

By comparing the words, in the 2 languages, you can learn a little Norwegian language, too!

Go to the web site to learn more--HAVE FUN!!!

BAA BAA
BLACK SHEEP

ROW ROW ROW
YOUR BOAT

HUMPTY
DUMPTY

(Norwegian)
Bæ bæ lille lam
Har du noe ull?
Ja ja kjære barn,
jeg har kroppen full.
Søndagsklær til far,
og søndagsklær til mor,
og to par strømper til bitte lille bror.

(English)
Baa baa little lamb
Have you any wool
Yes, yes, dear child
My body's full
Sunday's trousers for the father
Sunday's trousers for the mother
And a pair of socks for the wee little brother.

(Original English Version)
Baa baa black sheep
Have you any wool
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full
One for my master
And one for my dame
One for the little boy who lives down the lane.

(Norwegian)
Ro, ro, ro din båt.
Ta din åre fatt.
Vuggende, vuggende, vuggende, vuggende
over Kattegatt*.

(English)
Row, row, row your boat
Start rowing
Rocking, rocking, rocking, rocking
Over Kattegat*.

*Kattegat is a bay of the North Sea. The word Kattegatt comes from Dutch and German and means "cat hole" as in the narrow round hole doors used to have at the bottom to let the cat in and out, because this bay was very narrow and difficult to sail through.

(Original English Version)
Row, row, row, your boat,
Gently down the stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

(Norwegian)
Lille Trille
satt på hylle.
Lille Trille
ramlet ned.
Ingen mann i dette land
Lille Trille bøte kan.

(English)
Little Trille
Sat on a shelf.
Little Trille
Had a fall.
No man in this land
Could put together Little Trille again.

(Original English Version)
Humpty Dumpty
Sat on a Wall.
Humpty Dumpty
Had a great fall.

All the King's horses
And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty Dumpty
Together again.

Humpty Dumpty is actually a riddle. The question is, What is Humpty Dumpty?....

The answer to the riddle is: An egg! That's why they couldn't put him back together when he fell and broke.
